The
village of Cluain na nGall, or in English, “the
Meadow of the Stranger” is
set in a valley between the Blackstairs and Wicklow Mountains,
straddling the meeting place of the rivers Slaney and Derry
where the counties Carlow, Wicklow and Wexford meet. Clonegal
Castle (see below) is known worldwide and has been the
setting for many TV documentaries. The Wicklow Way Long
Distance Walking Route ends here. The mountains, the valleys
and the rivers, the fishing and the shooting facilities
have made this village at the end of the Wicklow Way a
favourite stopping place over the years. With a backdrop
of tree clad hills, this charming historic village is a
joy to walk in, explore and discover. With a castle - which
itself has a history, is both romantic and unusual; restored
Weaver's Cottages (see below); abundant wild and bird life
centred on its picturesque river; the village is a pure
delight to explore.

The
village of Kildavin, the Church
of Duban, is nestled in the shade
of the Blackstairs Mountains and has a rich tapestry
of history woven in the surrounding area. It is the
start of the South Leinster Way. This100km long-distance
walking trail winds its way to Carrick-on-Suir in Tipperary
over 8 stages. The Mill at Ballypierce, the Forge,
Corn store, Sand pits and Wool store tell something
of the history of the area. Only two places in Ireland
have what is known as ‘High Beach’ sand.
One is Lahinch in County Clare and the other is here
on our doorstep. Kildavin offers beauty, peace and
unspoilt scenery as well as opportunity to explore
its rich and varied past in holy wells, church ruins
and simple country life. Old ways blend seamlessly
into modern life in this oasis of tranquillity and
beauty. A famous son of the area is remembered in Spellman
Hall and Spellman GAA complex - Cardinal Francis Spellman
of New York.
